BIOGRAPHY

Carmen (Bourassa) Gonzalez was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada by her French Canadian parents.  Today, she still resides in Edmonton where she lives with her Chilean born husband and their three children.  She works full time as a visual fine artist and is active in the artist community.

Carmen grew up watching her artist mother paint and draw.  Due to her mother, Carmen developed a love for art at an early age.  In her teenage years, she became very passionate about drawing and spent most of her spare time drawing.  However, after completing high school, she took a different path away from art.  She spent 23 years pursuing other career paths.  Then, after a life changing experience in 2006, Carmen was guided back to pursue her dream of becoming an artist.

She began her artist career as a watercolorist while being a full time mother.  She improved her skills by taking watercolour courses and was mentored by a well-known Edmonton watercolourist Willie Wong.  Within two years, she began exhibiting and selling her work.  In 2009, she enrolled in the Visual Fine Arts program at the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta and graduated in April 2013.  During her studies, she discovered her fun contemporary pop/realism style.  She loves to paint in both acrylics and oils.  Her compositions are happy, playful, and nostalgic with the use of colour and patterns.

Carmen is a member of the Night of the Artists (NOA) www.nightofartist.com, Active member in the Federation of Canadian Artists www.artists.ca, and a member of Mondial Art Academia (an international artist group based in France) www.mondialartacademia.com.  She was also a previous member of Society of Western Canadian Artists (SWCA)  www.swcartists.ca in which she attained Signature member level.

As well, Carmen is a contracted artist for Mural Mosaic “MM” since 2017.  MM creates and install large mural mosaics all over Canada and the world.  Each mural contains 100s of small hand painted tiles which are put together to create the mural.  She worked with the artist team painting tiles for all the Mural Mosaic 150 murals which was a special project of 100’s of murals across Canada celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday.  Now, Carmen is currently one of the artists working for MM’s Artists in Residency.  She works at Edmonton schools presenting and teaching student and staff how to paint their tiles for the school’s own mural mosaic.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My inspiration can perhaps be found in Aristotle’s quote – “The aim of art is to not represent the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance”.  I am attracted to painting simple everyday objects.  My attraction is not only for the object’s beautiful shape, colour, and texture but also for its essence.  Simple objects have the ability to trigger strong emotions or memories transporting the viewer’s mind.  A painting of a simple piece of candy can stimulate childhood memories as well as our “inner child”.  And, perhaps a painting of a vintage telephone could spark memories of the good old days of waiting for hours for “that special call” or when you and your siblings would race to answer the phone first.

Accompanying my everyday objects, I love incorporating wonderful colours and patterns which take the viewer’s eyes on a journey from all corners of the canvas.  Different patterns causes different reactions to our senses.  These patterns help create character to each painting which often generates a nostalgic feel.  My intent is to make my viewers joyously smile.  For that reason, my subject matters and compositions are cheerful, playful, and meaningful.
