Daniel Winn Curricular Vitae - 2018
BIOGRAPHY
Born into a country at war with itself, artist Daniel Winn has lived a life of contrasts. His family, once among the wealthiest in Vietnam, were evacuated to the United States when Saigon fell on April 30, 1975 with little more than the clothes they were wearing.
Winn, merely nne years old at the time, found himself in a strange new land with knowledge of the language or culture. A bright, inquisitive child, Winn applied himself and by the age of 12 was a top student winning regional spelling bees and actually skipping a grade in elementary school.
Despite having to care for his younger brother while his parents pursued their own college educations during the day and worked full-time menial labor jobs at night, Winn maintained his academic excellence eventually entering the reconstructive surgery discipline at University of California Irvine medical school. As with his previous endeavors, Winn excelled at medicine. Even as a pre-med student, he wrote for prominent national medical journals and tutored medical students to pay for his college tuition.
But Winn’s heart was notin medicine. Rather he desired to create art. As far back as his early childhoodvin Vietnam, he jhas always sketched, sculpted and painted. Even while at UCI, Winn worked part-time at a local art supply and framing store in order to be able to buy paints, canvas and brushes. But the uncertain and economically unstable life of an artist did not fit into his family’s vision of establishing themselves in their new homeland.
Eventually, Winn went against his family’s wishes and opened a small gallery and frame shop. He worked long hours seven days a week to establish the business and within a few years had lucrative framing contracts with nationally recognized artists and agents. He leveraged that success and established high-end galleries in Newport Beach, California. Winn began helping other artists develop their artistic style and sell their work and in 1997 founded Masterpiece Publishing, Inc. wich would become onr of the nation’s leading fine art agencies.
Winn’s keen artistic eye, affable personality and strong work ethic served him well in bringing dozens of obscure and unknown artists (including M.L. Snowden, N. Tuan, Ira Reines and André Desjardins) TO NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL PROMINENCE. Acting as agent and curator, he guided, influenced and collaborated with those artists to create collections wich are widely recognized for their creativity, originally and quality. He curated museum and gallery exhibitions throughout North America and Asia, in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Montreal, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
In 2009, the Asian Business Association of Orange County, California USA recognized curator Daniel Winn as one of the top Asian entrepreneurs of the year for his outstanding work in thefine arts industry. In addition to recognition within the fine arts industry, Winn’s accomplishments have been recognized by Senators and Assembly Members of the California legislature.
But those successes has a cost for Winn who was unable to devote time to creating his own artwork. He promised himself that he would return to it one day, eventually setting the age of 50 as the time at which he would do so. Thus in 2016, Winn returned to his canvas and brushes and began to create again in a style he termed “Existential Surrealism”.
Winn’s goal with “Existential Surrealism” is to explore the basic nature of human existence and examine the relationship between free-will and providence, between self-determination and the universal plan. As Winn puts it, “We choose the nature of our existence but our genesis and our ability to choose are derived from universal divinity.”
Winn’s work is predominately figurative as it inherently focused on the human experience, but also incorporates abstract and even mythological elements to communicate the divinity of creation. He draws upon his own life experiences, surreal in themselves, his ancestral culture and the contemporary influences of the culture and nation which he has called home since escaping war-torn Vietnam in 1975.
Beside his passion for his business and his art, Winn is an avid philanthropist. In 2001, Winn used his connections to establish The Academy of Fine Art Foundation, a public charity dedicated to using art for the benefit of humanituy. He is also active in raising funds to provide badly needed medical services as well as basic necessities to underprivileged children and families in the U.S. and Vietnam. Winn’s philanthropic activities have raised in excess of one million dollars over the past twenty years.
EXISTENTIAL SURREALISM
Philosophical Concept
The artistic style known as “Existential Surrealism” was developed by artist and international curator Daniel Winn.
Philosophically, the style involves contrasts and counterpoints and examines the physical and spiritual dichotomy of existence. It juxtaposes the idea of a universal creative divinity against the concept of free will and self-determination by recognizin divinity as the genesis of autonomy and acknowledging our responsibility for universally constructive action.
Visually, Existential Surrealism uses a surrealistic style and subject matter to encourage the viewer to examine the nature of existence. Nonrepresentational elements and depictions of falling and flowing water represent a non-denominational, secular view of universal divinity.
Winn’s own life experience as a child refugee of civil war airlifted to a strange new home and his exceptional success integrating into its distinctly different and often intolerant culture while maintaining a sense of his ancestral heritage are important influences in the development of the style.
