ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings are shaped by regional influences from a life of moving throughout the United States. I have talked to women from the arid southwest, the California coast, Midwest and Eastern Seaboard. While each region brings a different set of opinions from women, it is the common factor of strength, love and femininity that I try to portray in my paintings.
My creative process usually begins with an idea inspired by conversations, memories, news or social media. I start my paintings in a technical manner of principles and design. My images are a combination of various photos and creativity. As I block out my painting, I begin to form my subject’s history. It is similar to an actor preparing for a role. I usually go from technicalities to creating my subject’s history while painting.
I find it interesting to play with the constant push and pull of a woman’s strength vs. femininity and to accurately depict it in my painting. I will position her hands in a downward loose manner indicating a softness and juxtapose that with a strong challenging gaze.
