Ray
Australie
Ray Besserdin, born to artist parents, began his passion with paper in childhood. He is entirely self-taught and has over thirty years’ experience, creating works that range from miniature to gigantic, abstract to ultra-realistic, but he terms his signature work “Impressionistic Sculptured Paper” capturing emotion, not realism. Ray uses mostly handmade and mould made, sheet formed cotton and mulberry papers from Europe and Asia. While he loves portraiture and compositions with hands because of their human expressiveness, nature is still his most beloved subject matter. Over his 30-year career, his private and corporate commissions hang in London, Munich, Tokyo to Manhattan, in New Zealand and throughout Australia.

Ray creates dimensional works in papers that he tears, teases and manipulates in innumerable ways as his palette. Most works are like bas reliefs, so his art is all of sculpture, yet at the same time he often builds scenes whereby he enters the domain normally that of painting. The works are extremely diverse and though they are entirely sculptured paper, some are up to 30cm deep and beyond 600cm long by 400cm high. Most are mounted onto a backing board that is coated in a large sheet of fine art papers. Occasionally, works may also be colour washed with fine inks that do not block the physical structure of the paper. Ray is also not averse to creating freestanding works from the same beautiful and seemingly delicate medium. His techniques result in the papers displaying extraordinary strength in self-support to the never ending surprise of viewers that such art can be created from papers.
